Welcome

MCC Social Advocacy works to promote social and public policy objectives that advance the common good and well-being of all Montanans in a manner that is rooted in Catholic teachings, beliefs, and principles.

Vote NO on CI-128

Montana’s Bishops encourage all people of good will to educate themselves on the facts of Constitutional Initiative 128 (CI-128), and vote NO on their November ballot.

Parental Notification is at Risk

In 2012, Montanans voted 70% to 30% to require parental notification 48 hours before an abortion for girls under 16—the only remaining law in Montana ensuring parents are informed. CI-128 would open the door to abolish this law, just as a similar amendment superseded a 24-hour waiting period in Ohio recently.

Undefined Terms Create Bad Laws

The full text of CI-128 does not define key terms such as “fetal viability”, “healthcare professional”, “voluntary consent”, and “autonomous decision making”. If the amendment passes, it will allow organizations like Planned Parenthood to file lawsuits to have current, or future, laws/restrictions on abortion struck down as unconstitutional.
Read the Full Text of the amendment here.

Abortion is Already Legal in Montana

Abortion is currently legal in Montana up to the point of fetal viability—generally at 24 weeks of pregnancy, with some exceptions for after viability. Before performing an abortion on an underage girl, abortionists are required to notify her parents, with some exceptions which safeguard women when notifying parents would create an unsafe situation. CI-128 would remove all regulation, making Montana into an abortion state, and allowing crimes such as coercion and human trafficking to go unchecked.

Montanans Securing Reproductive Rights (MSRR) is the coalition that drafted and is promoting CI-128. MSRR partners are:

• Planned Parenthood Advocates of Montana
• ACLU Montana
• Forward Montana
• The Fairness Project
